Some of you might have listened to the MIDI files I uploaded during the last days. Although MIDI is a very convenient way to save grooves, you still feel, that it is a machine just going along the click.

To get a better impression of what the grooves would sound like in the studio or at least with semi-pro equipment, I asked our keyboarder to re-render the songs for me in his private studio. As he’s currently absolutely fascinated on analyzing other musicans style on different instruments, he seemed to have a great time with my drum tracks. A few hours later I received a mail from him, with some words about what he appended to the MIDIs. Hm… I thought I just wanted to have a more decent sound in the mp3, but ok. He mentioned, that maybe there are a little bit to much humanizer effects on it. Until this moment I only had the chance to read some articles about humanizing or having some talks about it. This time was the first opportunity to listen to a humanizing result. And wow, yes from now on, I believe that you can really make drum computers sound like live. But first listen to the result in the following mp3.

mp3 file

First of all I have to concede to our keyboarder that it is too much humanized. It nearly sounds like someone is studying and playing the song for the first time. But that’s the point. When you listen to the song, always keep in mind, that it build out of MIDI, a system which is as precise as no drummer will ever be able to play. Every drummer always stated that you loose the feeling with computer made grooves, but this is the perfect example for showing the capability that a computer can simulate the feeling you set into the groove, be it straight forward or laid back.

Concluding I can just finish this entry with my scared feeling, that drumming lost its uniqueness. Drummers can no more state on the fact that they are irreplacable. Drummers can no more state that computer made grooves will be revealed in every situation.

During the next days I will upload the next MIDI song which has a really heavy laid back midpart. I am really interested in the results of this MIDI being humanized.

Stay tuned…

Wow!
