Finding musical cronies…

After almost three years living in Berlin, I imagined it to be nearly impossible to actively play music again. But as the german adage says “Never say never”. Since some weeks I met two cool guys searching for a drummer and so far I can only say, that it is a very good fit.

Musically it is not hard to identify influences, at least for those who know my favorite bands :)

So far, we have a rough mix of two songs. Interested? Well here you go:

Song1:

Song2:

You want song titles? Well, then you’ve never played in a band before. Titles are for pussies, enumerations are for real musicians.

Never the less, I am afraid there will be title announcements as soon as a singer joins this project. Of course we’re looking for a bass player as well to reduce rehearsal room costs ;)

Comments, opinions, suggestions? I don’t care, but feel free to post them right below…

P.S.: I have no clue where the glitches come from, seems the ftp upload messed up. Let us consider this to be our personal way of DRM…

Wow, more than half a year again, between two posts. I won’t start apologizing, things like this loose their impact, when you say them too often.

So, what am I up to currently?

Spare Time:

  • Searching for a band to play drums in Berlin, anyone who wants to play something between Opeth, Arch Enemy and Strapping Young Lad?
  • Still doing my piano lessons
  • Still expanding my DVD collection

Anything coding related?

  • More accidently I kind of contributed here, among other commits and joined the KDE on Windows project. This is mostly work related, but as I am searching for a new audio player on Windows, I have to admit, that amarok2 on windows is really cool. Using Qt 4.5 is still breaking some stuff, this is what I’ll try to investigate on during the coming weeks.
  • Haiku related? Hm… nothing serious to talk about, see this screenshot and try to remember, from where you might know this application:

yay a clock

I think that was basically it. I won’t start telling that I’ll write more often, you know that this won’t happen :D

Media back in the days…

Developing in your spare time is something weird. On the one hand you want to keep your social life ongoing (and we all know how fast you can forget about time while staring at code. Just look at the time I write this article), on the other it helps you so much when you are searching for different challenges than your work can give you.

Next week I’m going to be in Cologne again for a big birthday party, and as I have no children on my own (congratulations to Paradoxon again), I decided to play a little bit around with Cortex again.

Cortex is kind of *the* application when it comes to Multimedia on Haiku. It allows you to display all the things going on in your system regarding media nodes. While we already recognized that it also tends to manipulate the system itself, it still is a great peace of software, horribly to read and get into, but does the user care :)

Today I added some of the additional addons to the build, and well what can I say. The following screenshot starts reminding me where BeOS once was and that possibly Haiku will be there at some point. No I am not talking about opening Chapter 11 :P

Cortex on Haiku

I’d really like to investigate on so much more stuff, Haiku is still missing encoding support. Also all latest hardware technology is currently bypassed. All these are areas I am interested in and have absolute no to some clue about, but then again…

Let’s get social and go to bed.

Swimming in the dead water…

It is quite some time now since my last employer opened Chapter 11. From that on it took some time, effort and self-control to get distance to this topic. A lot of things have been said from a lot of perspectives. But this post is not supposed to talk about the past, it’s just an intro of what I’ve been doing during the last days.

As most of this blog’s readers know, there is still an open source variant of the BeOS out there, namely Haiku. Sometimes (or on a regular basis), people on IRC asked me, if I took a look at it and always I’ve declined. But like it is with an ex-girlfriend, either you like it or not, at some point you’ll meet again.

In case you’re reading through all Haiku related blogs and internet pages, you can see that a few people are even brave enough to try this OS out on their daily basis. So I’d considered Haiku to be at some usable state. Still working on a 1.4 GHz Acer Notebook minimizes your fun in using today’s virtualization possibilities. I can run images, but the performance is not even discussable. Thus, I’ve tried to install it natively.

The build system has a very easy way to cross-compile and even copy the files over to a partition, which is going to be initialized with the bfs. Simply add the following two lines to your UserBuildConfig, and you’re ready to go:

  • HAIKU_IMAGE_NAME	= sda6 ;
    HAIKU_IMAGE_DIR		= /dev ;

Now, as I am not interested in running any of the spectacular, high-performance, super-killer apps which are still available on Bebits, I have decided to build a gcc4 build to have at least an impression that I am using something decent and updated.

Unfortunately the input_server hangs somewhere, neither mouse nor keyboard was working. I’ve also tried the USB Legacy mode, which gave me the chance to have a mouse. Unfortunately the system either KDLs or deadlocks somewhere after around 10-20 seconds. Talking to one of the developers of haiku, he asked me to give him a syslog. Luckily there is a BFS read-only implementation for Linux, so I opened the partition and was fairly surprised to not find any syslog. I did remember, that there was one in the few seconds, I could work on it. So I rebooted, instantly tried to copy the syslog (to get the data flushed on the partition), and went back to linux. Once again, no syslog. It seems like the bfs is having real fun. Discussing all these issues (there were more, but nothing worth mentioning compared to aboves) with a friend, he suggested to try out the gcc2 build and wohoo, it worked out of the box. So the solution to all these issues is to still stay in the 90’s to use an OS, which approximately will be out in 2010.

Anyway, all I can say so far is, it has been great fun watching a Be related OS again on my machine. It’s just reminiscent mood I guess, but still: it is almost tempting to just do something.
And the year just started…

Blue Friday…

As it’s currently Christmas time, I think I’d like to gather some commiseration from you. To get even more interest, take a look yourself:

Blue Eye small

Now what has happened you might ask? What does the other guy look like? The solution of this whole story can be described within 4 simple points. Take

  • a dancefloor,
  • loud heavy metal music,
  • my head and
  • an elbow

Afterwards follow in “Zack McCracken” style: “Use elbow with Maurice’s head“. And you got the whole thing.

In case you are wondering how the elbow owner currently feels like, I have no clue. I was more in a rush to toilet trying to get it cooled and then we walked home. Luckily it was after 3 in the night already, so the party got not interrupted too early :)

What concerns me more is the fact that I need to tell this story again and again this evening as I am meeting up with some old school friends. Now this is going to be fun…

For the rest of you, Merry Christmas and all that stuff belonging to this yearly ceremony.

It’s really been some time, since I wrote anything here. I thought it had been only two months, but wow half a year.

So time for some updates. Still working for the same company, still trying to master the piano, still no band to play drums in. Anyone in Berlin looking for a drummer playing stuff in between Devin Townsend and Opeth?

I promise to write more regular here, maybe I should expand the topics to more spare time stuff, as I am currently not developing anything. Neither has my computer-music trip been continued.

Though, that is because of multiple reasons. First, during the last weeks there has been a lot of stuff to handle workwise, but also I moved to a new appartment. Living now downtown in Berlin is such a increase of life quality compared to the outlands in Adlershof.

The flat share does still exist (together with julun), though we expanded to three people now.

Finally here’s an update of the Berlin guys most of you will remember. Stay rocking on Christmas…

Once again it was time for the Dong Open Air, one of the greatest festival, held on an elevation, one can go to during the summer festival season. And once again, it was worth every cent of it. Just as a short summary:

  • Lots of people I thought I’ve never see again and had great talks with them
  • Lots of music I learned to like
  • Lots of party
  • Lots of mead
  • Lots of Whiskey
  • Lots of beer (omg, definitely too much :) )
  • Lots of sun
  • Lots of (enter positive emotion here)

For the ones of you interested in a larger review and some pictures, just continue reading…

something akin Maurice Moss from the IT-Crowd said while he was reading the manual of a fire extinguisher.

Since some time nobody was able to see me available on ICQ and I always thought it is the service provider himself to blame. Well, in some sort he is. During the weekend I played around with my fresh install of E-Live and to get online with ICQ, I build Gaim. Launching the application showed me that I was invisible. That is unusual at connection time, isn’t it? So I tried to set my online status to available, and the app crashed. Hm… restart, everything working, at least the app said, I was available and a few minutes later I received the first message saying “I can see you as available”. So the result is: During my test period of the MirandaIM Client my online settings on ICQ seem to got screwed up.

You can easily see, that nothing really exciting to blog about it happened. Because of that two funny links for those of you, that understand German:

Die Gewitter-Oma

Stay tuned…

What can happen, will happen…

Sorry for non-updating the blog since quiet some time, but I was on vacation and really feel refreshed and regenerated. Ok, after one day at work everything comes back to normal, but still…

A lot of stuff happened during my vacation, most of the time I was visiting my parents and friends at home, but also spend some time at a friends place in Hamburg. As soon as I get some pictures I will write something about the trip. But first let us come back to the topic.

As I do not own a car currently, I used my parents one. They bought a used one quiet some time ago and so it is no problem to let the son drive with it :P I had it for four times, and now let me only summarize what happened during that time with that car.

  • It was Champion’s League day. The popular match Bayern München against Real Madrid. I was heading to a friend to watch the match there having a chilling evening. On the way I only heard some loud noise from below the car. Some of you might know this sound. The exhaust pipe fell off. Darn, trying to get it off the locking system (as each car has it, so you do not really loose it) was impossible, as it was totally locked. So the only thing I could do was driving home with the pipe scratching on the ground, get some tools and be a little bit more brutal to it. At least it sounded better that evening without the exhauster :)
  • One day later. I drove to a Kreator concert. The supporter band Celtic Frost sucked many times, but Kreator was really a killer. I was totally impressed by them, as I saw them some years ago on the Graspop festival in Belgium, and there it was more like a standard gig. But afterwards I wanted to head back to my car. As we stayed a lttle bit longer in the hall, I did not care about most cars being away. But there you got me. The car was towed away. Screw you Cologne!!! I was parking at that street since more than 8 years now for each concert and it never was problem. To summarize the whole process of walking through Cologne getting my car back, it costed me around 130 Euros.
  • Two days later. As I needed to get my tuxedo to the laundry I took devil’s car again. Now what can happen next, you might ask? Well, a car has multiple parts to break, and this time it was a tire. It got totally flat during driving. God I was so p$(”§/… And the screws were already that old, that there was no chance to exchange the tire without proper help. Luckily a car garage was right next to the place the car stood and even more luckily the intern had to help me :)

I think now you know everything about my relationship to this car… Darn… Next time more positive news…

Share your fun…

As some people have strongly the opinion that everything should be for free, I accommodate and like to share the following links with you.

The first ones are YouTube links, a place where you can find almost everything. Todays topic is “misheard” lyrics.

The first one is from Trivium and was posted on Dan’s page, so I did not explore this one myself. Beside the fun of this movie I recalled Trivium with a different style, so I even learned something new about them. Seems like they went more to a metalcore style. Here’s the link.

Following a much older entry of the band Nightwish with some misheard lyrics to the song Wishmaster. I still feel sorry for the apprentice being fired for farming, but watch yourself.

Finally someone gave me link on IRC to a great application called FretsOnFire. For those of you, who know Guitar Hero, it is a familiar concept. You press keys on your keyboard, which symbolize a tone or chord on a guitar. The concept is as easy as fetching and challenging. On of the biggest pro aspects of it is its availability for the most known operating systems Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD and Mac OSX also. Additionally you are able to import Guitar Hero original songs, it resamples it to oggVorbis and MIDI files. So what are you waiting for. Get it and test your guitar skills.
